Thank you for this series - very interesting !

Your conclusion is spot on:
"truly see its people as intellectual assets, the most critical of the success factors for the company"

My 2 cents on knowledge management:

I could not agree more, even though I am a constant critic of outdated educational systems from pre-school to post graduate.

During my eclectic career I spent seven years as a university professor and I taught exactly as I had been taught -- I lectured and gave tests to see how much stuck. In my seventh year my lecture notes were dog eared and even I was bored.

With hindsight, I now understand that student brains aren't just knowledge dumps. If I were to invest in education today I wouldn't go to justs any educational provider. I would choose one that stimulated independent thinking and provided guidance on how to think independently. Not only would that result in more learning, it would develop the kind of learner today's world of knowledge and innovation needs.

Great aricle by Robert Durhager and Timo Heuer. Now all we need to do is to learn how to live by this manifesto. I makes much sense for the future of our kind.

Thanks for the write up. Never made it to one of David's cafe but have been a fan since I had a spell in KM in my former employ.

I'm particularly interested in "workplace design... to encourage collaboration" and was wondering whether you (or anyone else) had anything specific on this for planning an office move.

Cheers

Although both sides / factions in this debate are entitled to their positions, I seriously doubt that any one side is fully or primarily responsible for what is occurring here in our society at this point. It's probably 50/50 or 51/49 at worst. However, I am reasonably sure that continuing to argue and fight about it, without actually addressing the underlying root problems, will not advance anyone's interests. We all should Try Harder.

Hi “forbegos”.

As Jerry says, Dave Pollard, does a great job in responding to your comment, at least in the first 2 parts that I've read.

What I might add is that in order to find and expand the organizational sweet spot every venture needs to have the right people in place. Without conscientious, responsible, and talented people there is not much hope for success no matter what changes are made.

Best,
Charlie

Jerry, I like the 3 most important factors to establishing a knowledge-friendly corporate culture that you espouse. They are classic. Unfortunately, not too many managers pay much attention to them--Yet!

Well done, Joanna.
I particularly like the following statement: “In business, they (Knowledge Cafés) are particularly useful for bringing people together during and after mergers, to build relationships between individuals and teams and transfer tacit or experiential knowledge.” About 80% of mergers fail to achieve what they are intended to do precisely because they fail to restore critical relationships that are severed or limited during mergers.
Life and work is really all about mutually beneficial relationships. Many people have a hard time grasping that.
